The Kiwanis Club of Abilene awarded $500.00 scholarships to five outstanding Career and Technology students at the club's May 2, 2018 meeting at the Abilene Country Club. Scholarship recipients (L to R) this year are:

Kiwanis International encourages local clubs to establish a signature project. Signature projects are designed to demonstrate the impact a Kiwanis club can have on a community.  From playgrounds and parks to festivals and fundraisers, signature projects are the hallmarks of what Kiwanis clubs are known for in their communities. The Kiwanis Club of Abilene, under the leadership of Nancy Miller, formed a committee to determine what our signature project should be. Support for Our Adopted School - 10/25/2017

At every regular Kiwanis Club of Abilene meeting, there is a cup placed on each dining table. Members are asked to place a donation in the cup. One dollar is the suggested donation. At the end of the Kiwanis year, the vice-presidents meet to decide how to distribute the cup money collected during the year. This year, the entire amount was donated to  our adopted school — Reagan Elementary. Immediate Past-President Nancy Miller and Vice-President Robert Pritz presented Chris Halifax, Reagan principal, with a check in the amount of $1716.55 at the club's regular meeting on October 25, 2017. At the September 27, 2017 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Abilene, Jamie Breed was presented with the club's  Kiwanian of the Year award. Amanda Wiskow, last year's recipient of the award, made the presentation. Jamie Breed is a tireless worker for Kiwanis. She is a member of the club's Program Committee, serves as the pianist at meetings, is the coordinator of the BUG program at Reagan Elementary School, and served as the 2016-2017 Lt. Governor of Division 35 of the Texas-Oklahoma District. Jamie traveled to Paris, France to serve as a delegate to the Kiwanis International convention. The Kiwanis Club of Abilene presented The Bailey Choate Award to Dennis Laster at the Septermber 27, 2017 meeting. This prestigious award is presented to a member who has  long and distinguised service to Kiwanis Club of Abilene. President Nancy Miller presented the award and noted what a special honor it was to have Rosemary Choate present for the ceremony. Rosemary is the widow of former Kiwanis TX-OK Governor Bailey Choate for whom the award is named. The award includes a $1,000.00 gift to the choice of a non-profit agency selected by the recipient.

Pancake Dollars at Work - 09/20/2017

This week's meeting was a great example of the impact that the Kiwanis Club of Abilene has on organizations that serve the needs of children in our community. The donations are made possible by funds raised through our annual Pancake Day & Silent Auction fundraiser.

A $1000 donation was presented to Maschelle Ancell and Kristen Foster for the Ben Richey Boys Ranch. Maschelle gave a report on programs in progress and expressed appreciation for the support of the Kiwanis Club of Abilene and for the part the club plays in helping to make a difference in the lives of the residents of the ranch.

Chief Melvin Martin presented the Kiwanis Club of Abilene 2017 Melvin Martin First Responder Award to Linda Davison, a paramedic with Metro Care EMT.  Linda has more than 20 years of experience in the field of emergency medical service.  She has served the citizens of Abilene as well as some of our rural areas.  She humbly accepted the honor and communicated that God is her strength.  She stated the emergency team is there to do the best they can and that in their role, something new is learned every single day.  She encouraged everyone in the audience to take a CPR class.  “It’s important!” stated Linda. “It is a chain of survival and through...

 Mark Hoover presented 3 Zeller Awards at the club's August 30th meeting, bringing the total number of Zeller Fellows from our club to 44.  Those receiving awards at the meeting were Sherry Weeks, Amanda Wiskow, and Becky Spargo. With these presentations, our goal of $71,250.00 has been exceeded.  Our club's total is $73,389.00—103% of our goal.  The amount given represents 40,772 lives saved through this project.  By acheiving our goal, our club has been designated a Model Club. Kiwanis Club of Abilene Hosts Local Football Coaches - 08/24/2017

The Kiwanis Club of Abilene recognized the local high school football coaches at their weekly meeting at Abilene Country Club on August 23, 2017. The coaches gave a preview of their upcoming season.  The coaches attending the meeting were:

Todd Moebes, head coach at Cooper High School. Moebes is in his seventh year at Cooper and boasts a record of 29 wins and only 10 losses.

Del van Cox is in his third year as head coach at Abilene High School after 19 years as an assistant.

Jim Holloway is in his first year at Abilene Christian High School. He has previously coached at Lubbock Christian High School and Groom High School. ACHS plays 6-man football.
